Games: Fifth basketball victory for Mozambican women

Mozambique’s women’s basketball team on Wednesday night beat Kenya by 56 points to 48 at the 10th All-Africa Games in Maputo.

The Mozambican team is undefeated, winning all five matches in the first round of the tournament. Their earlier victories were against Zimbabwe (73-37), the Democratic Republic of Congo (67-53), Nigeria (52-44), and Algeria (68-67).

In Wednesday’s match the Kenyans fought hard, and at the end of the first half they were one point in the lead (25-24). But with the support of a stadium packed with Mozambican fans, the Mozambican women recovered ground in the third quarter of the game, pulling two points ahead of the Kenyans (37-35), and then sealed their factory in the final quarter of the game. At one point in the last quarter they were 11 points ahead, but the Kenyans then cut the margin of victory down to eight points.

In Group B, the Angolan women equaled the Mozambican achievement, and also enjoyed an unbroken run of five victories. On Wednesday Angola beat Ivory Coast 59-34.

In Wednesday’s other Group A matches, Algeria beat Zimbabwe (65-55), and Nigeria beat DR Congo (67-26), while in Group B Mali beat Cameroon (65-62), and Senegal beat Rwanda (68-25).

The teams that qualify for the quarter finals, to be played on Saturday, are Mozambique, Angola, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya and Senegal. Mozambique’s quarter-final will be against Rwanda.

The Mozambican badminton and netball teams both suffered defeats. On the badminton court, Uganda beat Mozambique by 3-2. And in netball Mozambique also faced Uganda, going down to a crushing 103-8 defeat.

In the other Wednesday netball matches South Africa beat Ghana (79-22), Botswana beat Zimbabwe (40-35), and Kenya beat Zambia (46-38).

The volleyball tournament ended on Wednesday, with Cameroon scooping the gold in both the men’s and the women’s finals. In the men’s final, Cameroon beat Algeria 3-2. In the match to determine the bronze, Kenya beat Rwanda 3-0.

In the women’s volleyball, the medals went to exactly the same countries. Cameroon beat Algeria in the final by 3-0, and Kenya took the bronze, defeating Nigeria 3-1.

Two matches were played on the football field. The South African men’s team beat Ghana 1-0, and the Cameroonian women footballers beat Algeria 3-0.
