Games: Mozambique wins bronze in Judo

Mozambican athlete Micael Fumo won the bronze medal on Thursday in the men’s judo under 90 kilo category at the 10th All Africa Games in Maputo.

Despite being knocked out by his Cameroonian opponent Dieudonn Dolassem, Fumo was awarded the bronze, according to the website of the Games Organising Committee (COJA) – thus contradicting a claim in Friday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, which alleged that Fumo had failed to win bronze.

Fumo shared his bronze medal with Kinapeya Kone of Ivory Coast. The gold and silver medals in this category went to Hesham Mesbah of Egypt and to Lyes Bouyakoub of Algeria.

This brings Mozambique’s total haul of medals so far to 11 – three silver (in swimming, athletics and karate) and eight bronze (two in boxing, and the rest in athletics, canoeing, sailing, chess, karate and now judo).

In the under 100 kilo judo category, Mozambican Wagner Sitoe lost to Ramadan Darwish of Egypt. Darwish took the silver medal, while the gold in this category went to Franck Moussima Ewane of Cameroon and the bronze to both Yacine Mescine of Algeria and Kambere Shabani of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the super-heavyweight category of over 100 kilos, the gold went to Faicel Jaballah of Tunisia, silver to Islam El-Shehaby of Egypt, and bronze to both Joseph Atangana of Cameroon, and Comicone Mendy of Senegal.

In the women’s judo bouts, gold in the three categories played on Thursday – over 78 kilos, under 78 kilos and under 70 kilos – all went to Tunisians, namely Nihel Rouhou, Hana Mareghni and Houda Miled.

The silver medals in the three categories were won by Sonia Asselah of Algeria, Honorine Mafeguim of Cameroon, and Antonia de Fatima Moreira of Angola. The bronze medals were shared by Vivian Yussul of Nigeria and Dechantal Ntiolack of Cameroon in the over 78 kilo category, by Alice Chebet of Kenya and Georgette Sagna of Senegal in the under 78 kilo category, and by Anna Correa of Senegal and Winnie Gofit of Nigeria in the under 70 kilo category.
