More than 200 people died on Saturday when a ferry full of passengers and cargo capsized off the coast of Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. International rescue crews saved 579 people, including 20 children.
Slam shock
Australia’s tennis grand slam drought has been broken with 27-year-old Samantha Stosur beating Serena Williams to claim the US Open on Sunday, 6-3, 6-3. The last Australian woman to win a grand slam title was in 1980. Serb Novak Djokovic claimed the men’s title.
UK, not EU: Hague
British Foreign Secretary William Hague has flagged a loosening of ties with the European Union to “get ahead”. A long-time critic of the union, he said the implementation of the Euro currency was a “giant mistake”.
Swedish terror arrests
Police in Sweden arrested four people overnight on suspicion of plotting terror attacks it was revealed on Sunday, the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Three of the men were Somali, the fourth was Iraqi. A spokeswoman said the detentions were the result of a “tip-off”.
Subcontinent submerged
Entire villages have been submerged, a million people displaced and at least 16 killed by floods in India's Orissa state last weekend. In Pakistan, the UN has begun relief operations after weeks of rain affected millions in the south.
Protesters jailed
A religious procession through the streets of Havana in Cuba turned nasty when police arrested at least six people for protesting the detention of political prisoners. There were unconfirmed reports, from dissidents, one man died in jail.
Nuclear plant blast
One person was killed and more were seriously injured after an explosion at a nuclear facility in France. Electricity provider EDF, owner of the plant, said it was an industrial accident, “not a nuclear accident”. No radiation was emitted.
New planets
Astronomers using a powerful telescope in Chile have identified 50 new planets. Sixteen of the new masses are bigger than earth and one is thought to be have conditions which may support life.
Indonesian clashes
Sectarian violence in Indonesia has killed five people and left at least 80 injured. The clashes in the city of Ambon were sparked by unfounded rumours a Muslim taxi driver was killed by Christians.
Fresh DSK accusations
Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is in fresh strife after police questioned him in Paris over an alleged attempted rape. The complaint was filed by a French writer. Sex charges against Strauss-Kahn in America were dropped last month.
Kenya’s deadly blaze
At least 75 people are dead after a fuel pipeline in a densely-populated township of Nairobi exploded on Monday morning. The death toll from the disaster which flattened homes and caused fires, is expected to rise.
New Miss Universe
Miss Angola is now Miss Universe after winning the converted title in Brazil on Monday night. Leila Lopes beat 88 other competitors to claim the crown at the 60th anniversary of the world’s biggest beauty pageant.
