Khethiwe must stay

A petition has been launched to stop the UK government from deporting Zimbabwean asylum seeker, Khethiwe Mashavave, who left her home country in 2002.

Mashavave is currently detained at Yarlswood Detention Centre and is supposedly being flown back to Harare today. She claimed asylum because of her activity in Zimbabwe and fear of returning to Mugabe’s regime.

She has been active for many years in a number of groups and organisations in Bristol including Bristol Refugee Rights and Bristol City of Sanctuary. She was highly prominent at the official public launch of Bristol as a City of Sanctuary in June this year. She was the keynote speaker for asylum seekers and refugees in the Council House at the civic launch ceremony. It is believed that her activities in the UK will put her at great risk if she is returned to Zimbabwe.
