He called on nurses in particular to stop complaining about low salaries start treating patients better. “To nurses and doctors I am grateful about the job that you do. Let’s treat the sick as patients and give them tender love and care. Remember one day you will be a patient so let us change our attitudes and ethics and take hospitals as places of restoration,” said Madzorera.
He also called on health professionals to use resources responsibly.
“I was embarrassed at a just ended conference when experts said that Africa is the number one dependent on donor funding and also the number one in wasting the donated resources. About 40 percent of the total given to Africa is lost either it expires or stolen. You people are our ears and eyes be good stewards,” he said.
Last year the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) produced a damning report on the health delivery systems in the country especially in relationship with antiretroviral drugs.
The report found a high incidence of theft of drugs and corruption, where patients were charged to enrol for antiretroviral treatment, which is supposed to be free.
