Main Street renamed

Main Street will be renamed Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo soon after the completion of the late Vice-President’s statue at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Main Street in the city.

The city‘s mayor Thaba Moyo said the decision to rename the street had already been approved by council.

“Bulawayo city councillors have unanimously resolved to give a fitting tribute to the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo by renaming main street, Joshua Nkomo Street. This is an excellent way to honour the man who is widely credited for uniting the people of Zimbabwe,” said Councillor Moyo.

The mayor said as soon as the statue was erected, the street’s name would be changed.

“We wish father Zimbabwe’s name could be known throughout the world. The street name will be on all maps of the city and those who do not know about the great man now, will soon learn about him and his great works,” he said.

The North Korean made statue was erected in the city on 13 August last year but was pulled down in September after Nkomo’s family protested that it did not capture the exact attributes of the late Vice President. During that time the Nkomo family and members of the civic society also voiced concern over the involvement of the Koreans in making the statue.
