Masvingo’s US$33m water project

City Council Mayor Alderman Femias Chakabuda revealed that they are set to embark on a US$33 million water project that will see the city’s water supplies increasing by more than 100 per cent to 60 megalitres per day.

Currently, the local authority is supplying 24 megalitres per day against the 48 megalitres required for its 120 000 population.

“We plan to built another abstraction work at another site in the dam (Kyle) with its own purifiers. We will then position another tank with its own purifiers on a mountain bringing the number of water supplying tanks to two.

“The town will be divided because of the two distribution points. Our engineers have also supported this project saying it’s cheaper than replacing the old system,” said Chakabuda.

Meanwhile, the council has already embarked on an US$800 000 water project in which it is laying a pipeline that would see water supplies increase by 30 per cent to 30 megalitres per day. The project is expected to be complete by mid this month.
