48 of the South African medals were won in the swimming events. Particularly outstanding were the women swimmers Karin Prinsloo and Suzaan Van Biljon. So far Prinsloo has won three golds (100 and 200 metres freestyle, and 50 metres backstroke) and one silver (100 metre backstroke). Van Biljon has won three golds (50, 100 and 200 metre breastroke).
Two other noteworthy performers in the pool were Jason Dunford of Kenya and Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe. Dunford has so far won two golds (50 and 100 metre butterfly) and two silvers (100 metre freestyle and 50 metre backstroke). Coventry has two golds (100 metre backstroke and women’s 400 metre individual medley) and one silver (100 metre butterfly).
Second in the medal table, but a long way behind South Africa, comes Tunisia with 25 medals, followed by Algeria with 24.
