No vote for Diaspora

Despite having participated in the constitution outreach process, Zimbabweans living in the Diaspora will not have a chance to vote in the referendum as there is no provision in the law.

COPAC spokesperson, Jessie Majome, said that the constitution was silent about people outside the country, adding that there is also reluctance by partners in the Government of National Unity (GNU) for the Diaspora to participate in the process.

Zanu (PF) has been reluctant to have the views of the more than four million Zimbabweans who are estimated to live outside the country considered.

“The legislature did not envisage the participation of the people in the Diaspora, so our referendum will not include the people in the Diaspora,” said Majome.

Millions of Zimbabweans are living in the Diaspora for political and economic reasons, and some managed to contribute to the constitution meetings during the outreach stages.

“People in the Diaspora, although they cannot participate from where there are currently living, are free to come back and participate as citizens of the country, so it is possible to contribute towards a new constitution,” said Zanu (PF) COPAC point-man Munyaradzi Magwana.
