On Wednesday, Mbada Diamonds unveiled a US$1 million Premier Soccer League knock-out tournament – the richest prize in domestic football.
CAPS United president Twine Phiri, who is also the PSL chairman, hailed the move as one of the biggest sponsorships in local football.
"I believe this will help to raise the standard of the game in the country. Players will give it their best with a sponsorship of this magnitude. It motivates the players and I am sure we are going to witness an interesting season this time around," he said.
Highlanders chairman, Themba Ndlela, agreed.
"We are really excited to have this sponsorship. Clubs have been struggling in this difficult economic environment and we want to thank Mbada Diamonds for chipping in.”
PSL CEO Kennedy Ndebele promised that clubs would give the sponsors “full value for their money”.
Mbada PRO Ignatius Mazura said the sponsorship was a “novel corporate social initiative” by the mining company which is in partnership with the Zimbabwe government in the extraction of diamonds in Marange. The tournament will be officially launched on September 16.
"The tournament will see the winners pocketing US$75,000, a floating trophy and US$150,000 worth of accommodation and air tickets sponsorship subsidy to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup,” said Mazura. "This is the latest in a series of projects to invest in local communities and what better way than to support the local football game.”
