Stop promiscuity: Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe has acknowledged for the first time that there are members of his government who are HIV positive and went on to castigate them for their promiscuity.

The president made the remarks at the official opening of the National HIV and AIDS conference in Harare on Monday

“We are even ashamed that even in government there are some officials who are promiscuous. There are some who are having one woman after the other and that is not going to take the country anywhere. They are positive but they are not afraid to spread the disease. They will be on ART but they are not afraid to spread the disease. I know such men, not from my extended family, but as leader of the government,” said Mugabe.

He went on to criticize men for not supporting their pregnant partners.

“Even fewer men present themselves for antenatal care together with their women and often, women have to unfairly take the blame when they inform their partners of their HIV positive status. The blame for HIV infection is placed squarely on the shoulders of the women who may even be abandoned or subjected to intimate partner violence.

Government thus encourages couples to go for HIV testing together and to support each other whatever the outcome of their test results,” Mugabe added.
