Team to investigate council gun abuse

The City Council here has set up a team to investigate whether the town’s firearms were used in the run-up to the 2008 presidential run-off amid reluctance by former mayor Ralph Chimanikire to hand over his gun.

In an interview, the present mayor, Farai Nyandoro, said the names of those on the team could not be revealed for security reasons.

“We are not on a witch hunt, but we do seek to establish the truth and bring to book anyone who abused the guns that went missing in 2008. As a council we must establish whether there was any abuse of municipal property,” said Nyandoro.

The MDC-T estimates that more than 200 of its supporters were murdered in 2008 by President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu (PF) supporters, but no arrests have ever been made.

The previous Marondera council was predominantly composed of Zanu (PF) Supporters, including the security chief of Mashonaland East Province and Lawrence Katsiru, who acted as the town’s public relations manager.
