The political boxing ring

'Fists and Fingers', the sensational new drama by leading theatre group Rooftop Promotions, opened at Theatre in the Park on Tuesday to massive acclaim.

Comparing politics to a boxing tournament, the play, written by the upcoming Patrick Chasaya of 'Sinners' fame, concludes that in Zimbabwe's current scenario, only crooked politicians who know how to hit below the belt can survive.

All the elements of a hilarious political comedy are there. An old, overweight and tired defending champion, Luga, refuses to either fight, retire or relinquish the championship belt that he has already stripped of its valuable diamond studs (echoes of Bob!). Facing him is a youthful, over-ambitious challenger (C) whose fans suffer untold violence from Luga's fans and are arbitrarily arrested by crooked cops on Luga's orders (Tsvangirai?).

The highly entertaining play ends unexpectedly when both fighters are forced to admit their shortcomings and acknowledge that supporters are the very reason why they are in the business.

With this new production, trailblazing producer Daves Guzha seems to have struck yet another 'discordant' note in the eyes of the authorities, who have previously banned some of his hard-hitting, politically-charged satirical plays.

Guzha received Special Mention at the Amnesty International Human Rights Awards in London earlier this year for 'Rituals' an anti-political violence play that was banned in parts of the country, resulting in his cast being thrown into jail.
