Villa 1 Nyau wins on stage

A traditional dance group, Villa 1 Nyau, clinched the first prize of this year’s edition of the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance competitions held at the Harare Gardens last Saturday.

The group shrugged off stiff competition from nine other eager contestants to walk away with the US$4 000 prize money.

Bulawayo based Umkhathi Theatre Works, and another Harare based dance group Budiriro Cultural Arts, managed to land second and third position, pocketing US$3 000 and US$2 000, respectively.

The Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance competitions are a brainchild of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association to bring back the pride and continuity of cultural dances at grassroots level.

ZNTDA was transformed from the Harare Traditional Dance Association in 1987 and became active in 1988. HATA originated from Salisbury Traditional Dance Association, which dates back to the Rhodesian era in 1963 and has been sponsored by Delta Beverages ever since.
