It is the measure of commitment of the believers, rather than their numbers, that indicates strength within the army of the LORD.
David had to learn this lesson when he was severely rebuked by God for numbering his army. Through this he was reminded that it was not “his” army, but the LORD’s. He was reminded also of the lesson that God does not save through numbers (1 Chronicles 21)
Gideon similarly had to learn a lesson of absolute trust in the LORD when the 32 000 men of Israel who responded to his call to come and join him in the battle against the Midianites and the Amalekites were whittled down to a mere 300. Yet it was through this handful of men that God chose to save the nation.
Gideon’s army was a highly trained, committed, dedicated, obedient and loyal band of men, who trusted the LORD, and were able to be used by Him to win a significant battle. This saw the turning of the tide and the saving of Israel from her enemies (Judges 7).
The spiritual lesson to be learned here is that God does not save through numbers but through absolute commitment. He saves through the trust and obedience of His people. Numbers do not indicate strength. The mighty miracles God is working among His people are a constant reminder that we can achieve nothing in our own strength. It is “not by might, nor by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord Almighty” (Zechariah 4:6)
