Why four gospels?

In the Gospel of Mathew, Jesus is presented as King of the Jews, the Son of David and the Lion of Judah. Matthew shows how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy and, also, that Israel’s rejection of Christ was in line with prophecy. Matthew was primarily written for new believers to know about the kingdom, especially young Jewish believers.

The Gospel of Mark presents Jesus as the Suffering Servant. Mark is the shortest of the four gospels and vividly describes the self-giving love of the Son of God through His entire ministry. Mark was written for unbelievers and is full of action.

Through the Gospel of Luke we see Jesus presented as the Son of Man. Man was the symbol of the tribe of Reuben. Luke presents a clear and orderly account of all that Jesus did and taught. The Gospel of Luke was also written for unbelievers..

John’s Gospel presents Jesus as the Son of God. There are seven people in John who declare Jesus to be divine and there are seven witnesses from John the Baptist to Thomas. There are seven miracles of which six do not appear in the other gospels and there are seven statements that begin with the name of God: I Am. (I Am the good Shepherd.) The Gospel of John was written for believers.

Some have said that Matthew is about what Jesus said, Mark is about what Jesus did, Luke is about what Jesus did and John is about who Jesus was.
