Women deliver on the road in Epworth

With a population of 170 000 Epworth, on the fringes of Harare, has for years had only a single clinic and no maternity facility nor ambulance - forcing expecting women to travel more than 50 km to Chitungwiza Hospital to deliver their babies.

Last week Medicine Sans Frontiers handed over to the community a clinic that is hoped to relive the pressure on Domboramwari Polyclinic, which serves people from Harare’s high density suburbs such as Mbare who come in search of lower user fees.

User fees in Epworth, which serves Seke rural constituency, are comparatively cheaper to those charged in urban Harare.

The Local Board Chairman, Mike July, appealed to the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to build a clinic for pregnant women, some of whom deliver while en route to Chitungwiza.

“Women are dying on their way to Chitungwiza. We have written to the Ministry of Health after UNICEF said that we have to appeal through the government to get the ambulance,” said July.
