The executive chairman of IPBT Nkosinathi Baleni said the GNU remained threatened by the refusal of Zanu (PF) to share power in any meaningful way.
“There should be definitely a legitimacy and guarantee of an election and we want to urge the immediate convening of a SADC summit to discuss a roadmap of that election,” said Baleni.
“Mugabe has refused to rescind his unilateral decision to appoint two of his top allies Johannes Tomana (Attorney General) and Gideon Gono (Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor) while he also refusing to appoint members from Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara as provincial governors,” he added.
“According to our investigations in recent months, Zanu (PF) youth militias and war veterans are working closely with CIO operatives to target members of NGOs and churches, labelling them MDC supporters.”
He said vehicles belonging to NGOs were being searched in various districts and drivers asked questions. If the answers are unsatisfactory they are told to suspend their operations in their area.
“Many NGOs have been accused of wanting to effect regime change – that is why we are saying SADC should intervene,” said Baleni.
A recent survey in Buhera, Masvingo and Manicaland Province last month revealed that some Zanu (PF) youths were moving-door-to-door telling villagers to vote for Zanu (PF) in the forthcoming elections. They told them that those who would vote for MDC-T would be known and they would be killed, so the country is not yet ready to hold any elections, he added.
Meanwhile, the Africa Apostolic Faith Mission has criticised Zanu (PF) political leaders of invading their church operations and interfering with their worship by preaching party politics.
Party heavy weights Oppah Muchinguri, Dydimas Mutasa, Chris Mushohwe, Mandy Chimene and Mike Madiro are among those using the apostolic sects for political gain.
“We worship God and not politicians. Our church has no room for politicians we are apostles of God and not apostles of Zanu (PF),” said a senior member from the Africa Apostolic Faith Mission.
“God has a way of doing things. He hears our prayers for a better Zimbabwe. He will wipe out our tears when the time comes. The chosen one will lead this country. All the same time we are saying time will come when political leadership will be given judgement by the Almighty God,” he said.
