Organisers of the annual Mangaung Arts and Cultural Festival confirmed that Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo will headline the event in Bloemfontein on October 1.

The two musicians are hailed as the most influential to emerge from Zimbabwe. It is for the second time this year that Mapfumo, who lives in exile after fleeing Zimbabwe in fear of his life, and Mtukudzi, will be performing together in South Africa.

Earlier this year, the two made a rare, joint appearance when they shared the stage at the launch of Abi’angu, the latest offering by Mtukudzi. The move took many by surprise following reports over the years of animosity between the two successful artists.

Meanwhile, other artists to perform at the yearly festival are internationally-renowned Bebe Winans and Johny Gill. South African acts Thandiswa Mazwai, Zakes Bantwini, Hip Hop Pantsula, Loch Logan and Rose Garden are also scheduled to serenade the crowd expected in Bloemfontein.

Macufe was launched by the Free State Provincial Government in 1997. Since its launch it has become one of the biggest cultural festivals on the African continent.
