Citrus farm destroyed by fire

A local orange farmer, Jack Martins, this week lost citrus trees worth thousands of dollars to fire when suspected illegal settlers razed his orchard.

The citrus farm, which is located close to the the Bulawayo/Beitbridge Road, was invaded by Zanu (PF) supporters three weeks ago. Farm manager, Stephen Moyo, said unknown thugs set fire to the farm on Monday night.

"The fire started around midnight on Monday. One of the farm workers alerted me and by the time we mobilised manpower to put out the fire, almost half of the entire crop had been burnt. We suspect the fire was started by people who invaded the farm two weeks ago," said the farm manager.

Moyo said the owner of the farm was not around when the incident happened.

"My boss was not around when the orange trees were burnt. I phoned him and he advised me to go and report to the police," said Moyo.

The citrus farm employs more than 100 local people.
