Dismal gateway to City of Kings

For many years commuters and tourists alike have been treated to the very dismal tin terminal/hanger that has been the gateway to the City of Kings.

Byo airport toilets - would a foreign visitor know he must put his hand into the dubious looking water inside the cistern?
Byo airport toilets – would a foreign visitor know he must put his hand into the dubious looking water inside the cistern?

Achingly hot in summer, pitifully cold in winter, with disgusting amenities, no wonder the staff are so disconsolate and the service from the customs officers so shocking.

Visitors just shake their heads in dismay at the shameful treatment meted out by the ZIMRE officials.

In which other country in the world is every single person asked to open their luggage? Surely random searches could be made instead of a minute inspection of every single traveller going through the both the green route and the red route?

And as for the toilets at the “airport” – this photo shows what we are offering as “comfort stations” to our visitors who pay the princely sum of $50 or so for a visa to visit our country.

We Zimbabweans know the vagaries of our toilet cisterns, but would an American, a Swede or a Frenchman, know he must put his hand right into the dubious looking water inside the cistern and actually lift the lever in order to flush the toilet?

No toilet seats, no door handles, no cistern handles! It is a disgrace to the nation.

In defence of the ground staff though, both Air Zimbabwe and SAA, full marks to them for their courteousness and civility under such pressing circumstances and conditions.
