Heifers for farmers

Local farmers here have benefited from a rearing project they started seven years ago with the the Lutheran Development Service.

LDS is an arm of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe. The focus of its current development work is water and food security, micro-finance and economic development, environmental management and sanitation, HIV and AIDS and infrastructure development and ICT in rural areas.

This is not the first time that LDS has empowered Gwanda locals with livestock as part of poverty alleviation interventions. In 2004, 32 goats were donated to the Selonga Woman's choir. To date the project has enabled many members of the community to meet their basic living costs.

Odius Mlilo, the Gwanda South constituency Member of Parliament, hailed the initiative by LDS saying it would go a long way towards improving the lives of locals.

"The gesture by LDS is worth praising. Many people in this part of the country live in poverty stricken societies. The assistance they continue to get from LDS is very useful," he said.
