Khune is Kaizer Chiefs’ captain

South African ABSA Premiership giants, Kaizer Chiefs, this week put to rest the saga behind the team’s captaincy, which was taken away from fullback, Jimmy Tau, recently.

After announcing that Tau was no longer club captain following media reports of an alleged fall-out with the former Skipper, Chiefs coach, Vladimir Vermezovic, put Zimbabwean national team grafter, Tinashe Nengomasha in charge for the following two games.

However, Nengomasha also fell behind Khune when the young goalkeeper was announced to be the Naturena-based club’s substantive captain Tuesday.

In a statement released on its website, the said, “Kaizer Chiefs relieves Jimmy Tau of his captaincy and appoints Itumeleng Khune as the team’s new captain. The appointment follows deliberations within the Club and Coach’s decision as a result of the media speculation surrounding Jimmy Tau’s tenure as captain. “The Club wishes to put it on record that Jimmy Tau did not send an email to the Club resigning as a captain and further that there was no ‘bust up’ between the Head Coach, Vladimir Vermezovic and Jimmy Tau as reported in the media.

“Itumeleng Khune will be supported by a committee of the following players; Tinashe Nengomasha, Kaizer Motaung JNR, George Lebese and Lawrence Molekwane.” In our Thursday issue, we erroneously reported that Zimbabwe Warriors skipper Nengomasha was the new Chiefs captain. The error is sincerely regretted.
