Kombi roof carriers banned

Police have banned roof carriers on commuter omnibuses and threatened to impound vehicles found with the roof racks.

This was revealed by the National Traffic Police Spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome when he said that overloading on kombi roof racks was a major contributor to road accidents.

Chigome said that the kombis were imported without roof racks and operators would remove the racks when taking their vehicles to the Vehicles Inspection Department (VID), a sign that they know the racks are illegal.

Operators have been urged to use trailers should they decide to transport luggage. The police say they are determined to try to bring sanity to the roads.
