MDC activists’ trial date

The trial date for eight MDC activists facing charges of murdering a police Inspector has been set for March 12, 2012.

Magistrate Don Ndirowei on Monday threw out an application for refusal of further remand lodged by the 26 MDC activists, who asserted the State had failed to provide a trial date since May. Eight out of the 26 accused persons are in custody, while the rest were recently freed on bail by the High Court.

Ndirowei said the trial date had been set in the High Court and he had no powers to alter it.

The State’s case is that the 26 bludgeoned Inspector Petros Mutedza to death at the Glen View shopping centre after he attempted to disperse the MDC activists' illegal gathering. The MDC activists say the police Inspector was murdered by revellers at a pub in the suburb.

The police have issued a statement vowing to punish the MDC activists who they insist masterminded the murder.
