Mozambican rustlers wreak havoc

Small-scale farmers have lost a considerable number of their cattle to Mozambican cattle rustlers who are smuggling them through undesignated entry points at night.

Veterinary Livestock Technician Luke Nkomo said stock theft had been on the increase in most parts of the province and urged farmers to rebrand their livestock to avoid losing them.

Speaking at the Launch of Cattle Branding at Chitakatira village, Zimbabwe Republic Police National Coordinator for Anti Stocktheft Unit said last year 14 882 cattle were stolen by rustlers and only 4 952 were recovered.

He attributed the increase in stock theft to lack of branding.

He said the country has a population of six million cattle but only 20 percent were branded.

“As police we working round the clock to arrest the rustlers,” he said.
