Operation Maguta castigated

The Zimbabwe National Army’s Operation Maguta is nothing but Zanu (PF)’s calculated move to maintain the army presence in rural areas in order to intimidate the rural electorate into voting for it.

“ZNA members are in every district of the country, purportedly to give technical assistance to farmers. But this is nothing but a political gimmick by Zanu (PF),” says Remios Maphosa of the MDC.

“The ZNA is found in Mudzi, Nkayi, Zaka, Gokwe and Gwanda. These are very dry parts of the country. When I asked one of its members, he told me they were promoting agriculture – assisting with irrigation and inputs activities.

“What boggles the mind is that we have the Agricultural Extension Services (Arex) teams in all parts of the country as well as Trium Corporation members, who provide the pipes and technical expertise on irrigation. Besides, these soldiers always don military fatigues. Most of them have already served their 20-year terms which means they should be retired under normal circumstances. It goes to show that Zanu (PF) has sinister motives behind all this,” said Maphosa.

In the run-up to the June 2008 presidential run-off between Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and President Mugabe, Zanu (PF) youths went on the rampage beating up innocent people in rural areas mostly in the company of soldiers.
