Protected flea market stalls

The local authority here will provide flea market vendors with new protected market stalls in the town centre before the rainy season reaches its peak, said Mayor Farai Nyandoro.

Vendors have been forced to play a cat and mouse game with local police as they sell their wares on the pavements.

The new stalls are currently under construction and will be fitted with water proof overhead protection. Similar market stalls at the site were demolished by the former Zanu (PF) government under Operation Murambatsvina.

“We contracted a private company to construct 586 standard market stalls for flea market vendors before the end of this month, or mid November at the latest. We want to remove the vendors from unauthorised selling points such as town pavements and streets. The vendors are congesting pavements and not paying rent to the council,” said Nyandoro.

Hundreds of illegal vendors have been forced to play hide and seek with the police as they have no licence to sell wares in the town.

“We look forward to settling at the proposed new market,” said a vendor, Tinos Hwenjere.
