Villagers set up legal fund

Villagers in Murewa West who have been victims of selective justice by the police are setting up a legal fund to enable them to hire lawyers in future.

Many victims of political violence at the hands of Zanu (PF) have been hauled to the courts and charged with violence themselves.

The villagers, mostly from the MDC-T formation, will pay $1 every month into the fund.

Gabriel Nhamo, a victim of political violence, said: “We really need a lawyer. When we are beaten by Zanu (PF) supporters and report such cases to the police we are shocked because the police end up arresting us. So we really need a lawyer.”

“We have been shocked by the conduct of the police and we therefore do not trust them,” said a villager.

The hiatus that was brought about by the inclusive government is wearing off as talk of an election next year becomes more pronounced.

“My husband was kidnapped by Zanu (PF) supporters and we reported the matter to the police who then arrested my husband even though he had done nothing wrong, this taught me a lesson and I think we should be prepared always,” said Mai Chizema from ward 14.
