Zim fans brace for Battle of Limpopo

Zimbabwean soccer fans are bracing for the Battle of the Limpopo after South Africa confirmed they would be sending their senior soccer team to Harare for a high profile international friendly against the Warriors on November 15.

Bafana Bafana last came here for a world cup qualifier against the Warriors in 2000 in a match which ended in tears after 13 people perished in a stampede after police fired teargas canisters following crowd trouble. Former Bafana striker Benni McCarthy had raised his middle finger mocking the fans after Delron Buckley had fired two goals.

The match was abandoned with South Africa leading 2-0. And since then Bafana Bafana have not visited Zimbabwe although their junior teams have come to Harare in the past. But this time the two teams are set to clash in a high profile friendly match.

The last time the two teams met in a friendly match in South Africa, the Warriors were walloped 3-0 and will be seeking a revenge when they clash in Harare. Both team failed to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations finals to be staged in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
