GAPUZ holds politicians to account

General Agriculture and Plantation Workers Union of Zimbabwe is in the process of compiling a list of politicians who have not been paying their farm workers the gazetted $55 per month.

Following complaints of suppression and ill treatment of farm workers by Zanu (PF) politicians who grabbed the land, the farm workers representative body’s secretary general, Gift Muti, said they were recording the names of politicians responsible. GAPUZ plans to take the accused to the labour court.

Workers who requested anonymity during the farm visit said they were being threatened not to complain about the slave wage they received. GAPUZ secretary General, Gift Muti, said it was unfortunate that politicians were not paying their farm workers the gazetted $55 at a time his organisation was advocating a wage review.

“We have a very long list of politicians, including government ministers, who are not paying their farm workers the stipulated $55 per month. We are going to approach the labour courts with these complaints. We strongly believe that politicians should not behave this way,” he said GAPUZ said it would not rest until farm owners respected the rights of their workers.
