Health Management Offices will be staffed with qualified personnel as the government resuscitates the sector, the Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor Gerald Gwinji, said last week.

“The Health Transition Fund launched today will go a long way towards attracting and retaining qualified staff in the health delivery system.

The skilled staff will be well remunerated and this will make the health system functional. Medical leadership will also be improved at all levels. Part of the funds will be channelled towards procurement of necessary equipment and other relevant infrastructure,” said Dr. Gwinji at the launch of the milestone Health Transition Fund at Marondera Provincial Referral Hospital.

Dr. Gwinji said that the government had identified priority diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB and and sexually transmitted diseases as major causes of preventable deaths which needed special attention.

“In this respect, government resources and effort will be directed towards the disease eradication course. The Health Transition Fund will also help adequately arm Zimbabwe to provide critical health intervention measures and avail affordable user fees to patients until the fees are finally scrapped.”

The last decade saw thousands of qualified health personnel take flight to foreign destinations in search of greener pastures as the Zimbabwean economy floundered.
