Indigenous play set to wow

Theatre aficionados are in for a major treat as award-winning playwright, Stephen Chifunyise, teams up with director/producer and theatre ally of many years, Daves Guzha, for yet another exciting play: “Indigenous Indigenous Indigenous”.

Set in Matema’s farm estate in Western Zimbabwe between Plumtree and Bulawayo, the play tackles issues of land ownership, wildlife conservancy, sacred national monuments and sharing of natural resources, among others.

The play exposes how government policies, such as the land distribution programme, have contributed to the demise of cultural heritage and numerous natural resources which are exploited by the new farm owners.

It also interrogates the land question, whether the rightful owners of the land are those who have been resettled on the land and have legal documents to show for it, or if they are people whose ancestors were born on the land and gave it to them as an inheritance.

The play features an impressive cast: Zenzo Nyathi, Sebastian Maramba and Silvanos Mudzvova. They will be joined by new theatre talent Nothando Nobengula who is known for her appearances in “Playing Warriors” and “Think”, amongst other films. The darling of Zimbabwean media Chipo Bizure completes this cast.

The play premiers at Theatre in the Park on November 8, 2011 and opens for the public on November 9 and will run until 19 November.
