Mat North braces for Sibanda onslaught

Village heads in Tsholotsho North are living in fear after war veterans’ leader Jabulani Sibanda reportedly tasked them with recruiting supporters under Zanu (PF) ticket, failure which they would risk his wrath.

Sibanda’s new reign of terror follows that in Masvingo, where he spent almost a year campaigning for Zanu (PF) while threatening villagers and suspected opposition supporters.

The Zimbabwean visited the affected area in Matabeleland North province last weekend. Village heads narrated the ordeal but chose to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

“We are not afraid of him, we know of his plans but that is meaningless,” said Sizalobuhle Bhebhe a villager.

The MDC (Welshman Ncube) Mat North Provincial Secretary, Robert Mugezelwa Ncube, said they were aware of the Sibanda’s plans.

“We are closely watching him. Despite having successfully done it in Masvingo he will not make it here. We know how to deal with him,” said Ncube, without specifying what kind of action his party would take.

“We do not have problems with these other political parties because they do not force anyone to go to their rallies but the problem is with Zanu (PF) who when they come into this place they want everyone including children to be part of the rallies.

“Now for the past two months Jabulanai has been terrorizing us here, we had a first meeting on 6 September then the second one on 14 September where he advised us that the next time he returns he want us to have convinced every villager to join Zanu (PF) of which I am expected to bring all my charges with me to the rally,” said one headman.

“We are afraid for our lives because the last met him here he was so angry and rude. He moved from one ward to another including 1, 2 5, 7 and 8 where he addressed village heads. He told us in no uncertain terms that no one should attend the MDC rallies in the constituency,” said another.
