MDC rally not sanctioned

Overzealous police officers on Friday refused to sanction an MDC rally scheduled for Rutenga Grounds, claiming Zanu (PF) had booked the same venue for an event.

In yet another move reflecting police favouritism, members of the Police Internal Security Intelligence, working with the Bikita dispol, banned the MDC rally that was scheduled for Saturday November 26.

According to MDC Member of the House of Assembly for Zaka Central Constituency, Harrison Mudzuri, who is also the party provincial spokesperson, the police refused to grant the former opposition party permission to go ahead with the rally, arguing that Zanu (PF) had already booked the venue for one of their rallies.

Mudzuri, however, dismissed the argument as baseless.

“We informed the police in time and they pretended as if everything was in order and they even told us that they were processing our application. We checked with them on Friday, so that we could collect our approval letter, and they began to shift the goal posts.

They then filed the application letter to the Bikita dispol and we received a message that the rally had been cancelled in favour of the Zanu (PF) event. We would like to know the method they used to prioritise the Zanu (PF) rally over our programme,” said Mudzuri.

The Zanu (PF) programme never happened, leading the MDC to assume that the whole affair was designed to frustrate their activities in the rural areas.
