MDC-T councillors, who asked not to be named, said that when Chiyangwa was chairman of Zanu (PF), he had a group called Youths in Defence of Zimbabwe’s Sovereignty that was similar to Chipangano.
“We were scared that Chiyangwa was going to come back and terrorize us like he did in the past. The fact that Zanu (PF) has not readmitted him is a major relief,” said the councillor.
The MDC has a stronghold in Chinhoyi urban, the only island in a province where Zanu (PF) has control.
“At the moment there is peace in the town. We are working very well with our Zanu (PF) counterparts as it is council business first before party politics,” said the councillor.
Analysts say that Mugabe is still angry with Chiyangwa for selling the country’s secrets, and he has no intention of welcoming him back into the Zanu (PF) fold.
