Zuma is the SADC appointed mediator to the Zimbabwean crisis and his facilitation team took the letter with them when they recently visited the country, according to the Assembly Secretary General Promise Mkwananzi.

“The Youth Assembly appeals to your esteemed offices to guarantee that Madzore will not be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment. In particular, the Youth Assembly is concerned with the high prevalence of torture of political prisoners in detention,” said Mkwananzi in the letter.

In what the MDC-T Secretary General Tendai Biti has described as a selective application of justice, several activists from the MDC are languishing in prison.

At the moment 27 MDC supporters are in prison accused of the murder of Petros Mutedza a policeman at Glen View Shops in Harare.

“The assembly implores your office to guarantee that Madzore will face the due process of the law, based on the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. It is imperative to state that Madzore is a senior political leader in the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai, and his controversial arrest has deep implications for the government of national unity,” said Mkwananzi.

The assembly added that the continued harassment of MDC leaders and members demonstrated to SADC and the facilitation team that Zanu (PF) has not relented in its resolve to subvert the will of the people.
