Economic Planning and Investment Promotion minister, Tapiwa Mashakada, has said.
The comment was made during the launch of the Zimbabwe Medium Term Plan 2011-2015 on Friday last week. He said although agriculture was among the government’s top priorities, there was a need for farmers to be serious and start producing the goods.
“Let us not just grow grass in the farms, let’s be productive. The government cannot just continue to pour resources where there is no productivity,” said Mashakada.
He said there was need to depoliticise the agricultural sector.
“Farmers should access inputs without being asked for a political card. Let’s depoliticise the programme,” said the minister.
New farmers have been criticised for grabbing farms and converting them into trophies. Vast tracts of land taken from former white commercial farmers during the height of farm invasions are lying idle, while the equipment has been vandalised.
The government will need approximately $9, 2 billion to finance the MTP in order to meet the growth and development targets during the plan period.Post published in: Business
