No Zanu (PF) card, no inputs

War veterans led by Zanu (PF) politburo member, Munacho Mutezo, and local traditional leaders, have hijacked the government input scheme which was established to give subsidised inputs to poor small scale farmers.

The farmers said that although Finance Minister Tendai Biti unveiled the input scheme to fund farmers during the 2011-2012 farming season, they were being forced to join Zanu (PF) and buy party cards in order to be eligible.

A senior social welfare officer, who declined to be named for fear of victimisation, said Munacho Mutezo, who is eyeing a seat in Chimanimani constituency, together with senior army officials and chiefs, was telling Agritex and Social Welfare officers to hand over vouchers to Zanu (PF) card carrying members only.

"The situation is so bad here because the programme is being run on political lines. We have talked to the politicians and told them that their behaviour was against the spirit of inclusive government’s policy of empowering the genuine disadvantaged members of the communities," said the official.
