Soldier fined $200 beating defenceless woman

An officer stationed at the Air Force of Zimbabwe’s Thornhill base has been convicted by a local magistrate for severely assaulting a defenceless woman and fined $200.

The state led by Michael Mhene told magistrate Joselen Mashiri that Warrant Officer George Mhangami lost his dog last month and send his domestic worker to the complainant, Irene Manono, who resides in Mvuma, to collect the dog.

The domestic worker however returned without the dog, saying he had been sent away by the complainant because he had no identity particulars.

Mhangami accompanied his employee to Manono’s residence where they untied the dog without informing her.

This led to a misunderstanding and Mhangami hit the complainant twice on the face, struck her with clenched fists and further assaulted her with a sjambok several times all over the body.

Mhangami admitted to assaulting the complainant but denied using clenched fists.

The complainant sustained a swollen face and a bone fracture in the leg. A medical report was produced in court. Mhangami pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a wholly suspended six months imprisonment on condition he paid $200.
