Wilting crops worry farmers

The soaring heat is causing farmers to fear that the country could experience another drought as the farming season enters its fifth week without rain.

Farmers who planted an early crop October, despite warnings by the government meteorological department, watched helplessly as their crops wilted in the sun. The meteorological department’s weather focus suggested farmers plant crops in early November.

The majority of farmers, mainly in the peri-urban areas, ignored the warning, to the detriment of their maize crop.

“With all this talk about elections early next year, there was no way normal rainfall could be experienced in the country,” said an elderly villager, Mbuya Nhemiya Nhehwa.

“I have already lost hope in this year farming season as I planted all my seed stock. There is no way I would afford to buy more seed. Farmers yet to plant their seed should not lose heart, as there was still time,” said a government Land Development Officer in Chivhu.
