Led by the Communications and Allied Services Workers Union of Zimbabwe Deputy President, Clifford Nkala, the “election” took place at the Exchange Building offices of the breakaway Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Saturday, November 12.

The polls saw Nqabeni Nkala of Zimbabwe Energy Workers Union voted in as Chairman ahead of two other contestants. Elias Hove of the Civil Service Employees Association was chosen as Vice Chairman. Nokuthula Zondo of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe became Secretary, while Ayiwane Moyo, of the splinter Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe took the treasurer’s post. Eight committee members, representing the unions that attended the meeting, were then appointed.

The polls took place despite the fact that a legal challenge by Nkala’s allies such as past ZCTU President, Lovemore Matombo and Progressive Teachers Union, Raymond Majongwe, is still pending in the courts.

Chairman of the Western Region, Reason Ngwenya, queried the weekend poll saying, “There are several anomalies in this sham election. For example, the Zimbabwe Graphical Workers Union, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Leather Shoe and Allied Workers Union and a few others are not fully paid up members of the ZCTU.”

A comment from faction leaders, Lovemore Matombo and Raymond Majongwe, could not be obtained.
