BAZ decision causes tension

Leader of the smaller MDC faction, Welshman Ncube, said this week that the recent awarding of two free to air national commercial radio licences to companies associated with Zanu (PF) was bound to create tension within the fractured coalition government.

He added that the decision would open room for legal challenges as the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe went against what is laid down in the Global Political Agreement.

BAZ last month awarded two radio licences to Zimpapers and Supa Mandiwanzira’s AB Communications, companies both linked to Zanu (PF).

Speaking at a SAPES Trust Policy dialogue at the weekend, Ncube said it was up to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who supervises ministers, to seek an explanation of what happened from the Minister of Media, Information and Publicity Webster Shamu.
