Customs delays a worry: SFAAZ

Zimbabwe Revenue Authority computerised customs clearing system has caused serious delays, according to Joseph Musariri, CEO for the Shipping and Forwarding Agents Association of Zimbabwe.

The computerised system upgrade was introduced by ZIMRA in October 2011. Musariri said that although they welcomed the development, the delays were severely affecting their business. He cited Beitbridge, Harare Port and Harare airport as the areas which had been significantly affected by the upgrades.

"In the face of these challenges, the association has been in continuous engagement with ZIMRA who have expressed their commitment to quickly resolving the issues," said Musariri.

He added that the delays had affected the movement of transit cargo into and out of the region, in addition to huge storage and demurrage costs that importers and exporters continued to incur.

"In our view, the costs to industry and the region have been quite significant," he added.
