Demo over 13th cheque

Local council workers here have been staging demonstrations over unpaid November salaries, amid revelations that there will be no 13th cheque.

The workers described the conduct of the city fathers as inhumane and grossly insensitive.

“What pains the most is that we have realised that the employer is acting dishonestly,” said Kudakwashe Munengiwa, the local Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Urban Council Workers Union. “As we speak, some of the councillors are in South Africa while others in Victoria Fall on unknown businesses. We have heard that they get $ 1000 a day in allowances. It’s unbelievable.”

Mayor Teddius Chimombe said that the council was battling to survive and would only be in a position to pay workers when there was money for salaries.

“Councillors are only going on business trips for the good of the rate payers, saying that their trips are a waste of money is untrue,” he said.
