Egyptian-style revolution: Sikhala

MDC-99 leader Job Sikhala has called for mass protests against the Government of National Unity, saying that it was being used by Zanu (PF) to gain legitimacy.

Speaking at a press conference, the former legislator said only ‘united’ masses would remove President Robert Mugabe from power.

“Each time Mugabe calls for elections, he is calling for a blood bath and it is common knowledge that Joshua Nkoma was forced into a unity arrangement because 20 000 of his followers were being slaughtered. Politicians like Abel Muzorewa, Ndabaningi Sithole and Morgan Tsvangirai were forced to withdraw from an election because of violence unleashed on their supporters. Mugabe could do anything to stay in power, even if it means killing people,” said Sikhala.

His solution – confront the president head on.

“The people’s wishes cannot be subverted. MDC 99 is organising people for mass

protests, and this will force Mugabe into action. People should brace themselves for an Egyptian-style revolution,” said Sikhala.

He dismissed the ongoing constitution making process as a farce and said his party would campaign for a no vote.

“We are already in the process mobilising our people,” said Sikhala.

Sikhala also criticised President Mugabe for using government money to fund his medical treatment in Asia, saying that his Zanu (PF) government was behind the deterioration of the health sector in the country and the president should be treated at Parirenyatwa Hospital like everyone else.
