The December 21, 2012 Phenomenon

Colossians 2 vs 8 “Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

The December 21, 2012 phenomenon that the world is coming to an end is nothing but an Eschatological belief (a study of the end of humanity and the world). Theory has it that on this day certain events will occur which mark the end of humanity because on this date the Mesoamerican Long count calendar (Mayan calendar) which has a 5,125 year long cycle comes to an end. Ideas that have arisen from analyzing this calendar state inhabitants will undergo a spiritual transformation (maybe referring to the rapture) whilst others say it is the end of the world or a catastrophe will occur like earth’s collision with a black hole or planet. A lot of hype has undoubtedly arisen world-wide as a result of this story causing people to panic. The Huffington post reported that a lot of people could make money from capitalizing on those concerned about this perceived threat. It further reported that people who could benefit from this hype are those like Robert Richardson who runs Off Grid Survival website which helps people prepare for such worst case scenarios such as the end of the world. However it is very important to know what the bible says about this issue.

1 Thessalonians 5 vs 2 “For you know quite well that the day of the Lord's return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night”

Mark 13 vs 32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Acts 1 vs 7 “He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority”

Revelations 16 vs 15 “"Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed”

Matthew 24 vs 40 “Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left”

So one thing for sure is no one knows the end of the world but only God the Father. Secondly when he comes it will be like a thief in the night, meaning it will be when you least expect it to happen. Lastly the spiritual transformation referred to will not happen to everyone because “one will be taken and the other left”, and no one knows when it will happen. So do not be carried away by empty philosophies the only way to prepare for that day as Matthew 25 says is take your oil in your vessels and be watchful.
