NGOs that have embarked on a feeding programmes to benefit people living with HIV and AIDS in Marange and Bocha have been affected by the politicisation. The villagers are meant to receive food hampers containing packets of beans, cooking oil, mealie meal, rice, soap and many other items, on a weekly basis.
However, some Zanu (PF) officials and war veterans in Marange have taken over the programme and are demanding that all beneficiaries join the party if they want to continue receiving the hampers.
Innocent Baipai, a former food programme coordinator for an NGO (name withheld), said: “It is sad that some people are being denied food. The whole project has been hijacked by Zanu (PF). It is totally unacceptable that the war veterans are demanding party cards from children as young as eight years so that they can get the food”.
In Bocha, notorious war veterans identified as Bernard Makadzange and Joseph Murimwa were spearheading the operation.
“I had to buy the party cards for all my relatives so that they can access the food. It has become very difficult in this village after donors and other AIDS organisations were booted out,” said an elderly woman.
Some NGOs distributing food aid and medication in the district have suspended their operations following interference by Zanu (PF).Post published in: News
