Chihuri should resign over Mujuru’s death

Dear Editor,

The details coming out from General Mujuru’s inquest at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts is a clear demonstration that Augustine Chihuri, the police chief has failed his job and should quit in shame.

Police officers cross examined during the inquest have demonstrated how Chihuri does not consider fully equipping his junior officers with basic needs that they have to use to do their job.

The officers have revealed that their radio was down and they could not communicate with the Beatrice Police Station to inform them that there was a serious inferno at the farm.

Furthermore, when Beatrice police was finally contacted the police officers could not urgently get to the scene as they had no vehicle. It is therefore only Chihuri to blame for this inadequacy. The some of the police officers decided to sleep while they were on duty because Chihuri does not take their concerns seriously.

Day in day out, the police are mounting roadblocks in every city and major highway collecting fines from motorists, commuter omnibuses and buses. However, this money is not being channelled the normal way in order to benefit the police, other civil servants and to improve on the accommodation and operational needs of the police officers.

It is going straight into the pockets of Chihuri and a few of his lieutenants living the police officers living like rats.

It is also surprising that Chihuri always finds energy and the resources when it comes to arresting members of the MDC, media and those from the civil society at most times on false charges which will be dismissed in court.

Because of what is coming out from the inquest the blame of General Mujuru’s death should be placed squarely on Chihuri and no-one else. If we in Zimbabwe were living in true democracy, it was time that Chihuri resigns because he is a failure.
