ZRP officers in dock for theft

Two Gweru police officers believed to have been involved in a series of robberies have been arrested.

Makuhunga Shumba (28) and Robert Tapiwa Matingwende (32) have since appeared before local magistrate Meo Rubwe facing theft charges. They both pleaded not guilty.

It is the state’s case that last year on April 18, the two officers were patrolling the Mkoba area. In the early hours of the morning they met Chrispen Wiseman Banda, who at that time was a security guard at a local shop. He was in possession of groceries which he admitted had been stolen. The police officers then confiscated the goods, but instead of taking them to the police station, they kept them and released the suspect.

The matter came to light when the owner of the shop made enquiries at Nehanda Police station. It was discovered that no report had been made and there was no docket for the case.

Magistrate Rubwe remanded the two out of custody to March 1.
